Repairing a Stuck Microwave Turntable

Microwave turntables are great for ensuring that our food gets cooked evenly. When they become stuck or stop rotating all together, it can be difficult for your cook to get cooked all the way and sometimes even take a lot longer to prepare all together.

Repairing a microwave turntable can be a simple task that you can take care of yourself with the help of a few tools and step-by-step instructions. In this article, we will show you what you need to do to get your turntable working again without investing a lot of your time or money. The problem may lie in the motor itself, or be caused by debris being stuck in the track.

Before we begin, grab the following list of tools for an optimal appliance repair:

  • Old toothbrush
  • Screwdriver
  • Continuity tester
  • Distilled white vinegar

If the motor in your turntable needs to be replaced, you will need these other replacement items:

  • Motor
  • Motor Wires
  • Motor Belt

Now that you have got your hands on the needed materials, it’s time to begin.

1.) Assess the Turntable Track

Check the turntable’s base, track, guides, and wheels for any kind of foods or debris that may be stuck. The turntable cannot function properly if there is anything in it’s path.

Unplug the microwave before doing any cleaning to ensure your safety. To easily cut out any grease or grime in the track, use the white vinegar in a thin layer and let it sit for 10 minutes before scrubbing with the toothbrush.

2.) Assess the Turntable Belt

Remove the outer case on the microwave’s face and be sure to take out all of the screws around the edges and in the rear. Locate the motor beneath the microwave floor, and check the turntable belt for cracks or breakages. If the belt is broken or frayed in any way, it needs to be replaced.

3.) Check the Turntable Motor

Using the continuity tester, check the turntable motor to see whether or not the motor is still working. This is done by touching the probes of the continuity tester to the electrical contacts of the motor.  If the tester does not light up then the motor needs to be replaced as it is no longer functioning.

While you are already checking the motor, perform an inspection of the wires and other electrical connections from the motor. Wires that are bent, frayed, or damaged in any other way you may notice could be the cause of the shorting from the motor. Even if the continuity tester says the motor is working, replace the wires anyways.

4.) Apply a Bearing Lubricant

After checking the motor and cleaning the turntable track, test the turntable yourself by moving it with your hand. At this point both should be running smoothly but if not, lubricate them with a bearing by spraying it onto the axels of the motor.

5.) Put Everything Back Together 

Now that you have cleaned out the mentioned components of your microwave and performed the proper testing, put everything back in place again in the reverse order you removed it.

Put the face plate back in place, followed by securing them with the screws they were formally held in place with.
